You may have noticed plenty of photos across our Instagram this summer. From the UEFA U19 European Championship held in North Wales to Merthyr Town’s exploits at Penydarren Park and beyond, an up and coming photographer has been cutting his teeth and is producing an insanely good quality of work. Despite only picking up a camera a couple of months ago, a clear passion and love for sports photography is gaining a lot of recognition already.
We’ve caught up with Harley Lloyd-Cooksley to explore his photography journey so far, see some of his favourite shots and find out what it's like to cover football from a unique angle.
How did your photography journey begin?
My photography journey began as I wanted to keep being around the football pitch. I knew I wouldn’t make it as a footballer but I could stay around the game in a creative capacity. I tried editing and graphic design first before I picked up my camera and I never looked back!
The best game had to be in Wrexham for the Under 19 Euros final between Spain and Germany. I grabbed some amazing shots which got me a lot of recognition and led to a lot more clients and opportunities for myself.
Are there any photographers that have influenced you?
There have been multiple photographers who have influenced me! I could be here until the sun goes down talking about how many photographers who have helped me that little bit on my journey so far.
You’re currently involved with Merthyr Town this season covering their First Team’s exploits in the National League North, how is that going so far?
Shooting for Merthyr Town is class. Getting closer with the players, coaches, staff and supporters is super fun as I love talking to them all whilst also providing them high quality photos.
Do you have any advice for anyone looking to get involved with photography themselves?
I think the best bit of advice is to start as soon as possible! Everyone talks about starting something one day but never does, pick up the camera and don’t look back because that’s what I did and I think it’s working out half decent!
